Amos

Author & Date:
Amos, whose name means “burdened” or “bearer,” was a prophet commemorated on June 15. He lived around 754 BC and was a shepherd from Tekoa, south of Jerusalem. Amos prophesied to the Southern Kingdom (Judah) between 795–754 BC, and his writings are among the earliest prophetic texts.

Themes:
  • God’s Wrath and Justice: Amos warns that God’s wrath will first punish neighboring nations for crimes against the Jews, then turn to Israel for sins such as oppression of the poor, incest, indulgence, gluttony, and drunkenness.
  • Call to Repentance: There is a promise of restoration for Israel if they repent, but foreign captivity awaits if they do not.
  • Social Critique: Amos condemns the aristocratic class for their wealth and exploitation, emphasizing justice and righteousness.

Background:

Amos was sent to Bethel to warn the Northern Kingdom. His prophecies occurred about 30 years before the Assyrian conquest of Samaria. He faced opposition from priests and was eventually killed for his message.

Key Insights by Chapter:

  • Chapters 1–2: Judgments against spiritual enemies and neighboring nations. Emphasis on the consequences of habitual sin and the need for humility in interpreting scripture.
  • Chapters 3–4: God’s justice is not arbitrary; suffering can lead to conversion. God is not the author of evil, but allows tribulation for growth.
  • Chapters 5–6: Israel is likened to a “fallen virgin.” Justice and righteousness are fulfilled in Christ. Religious practice without genuine faith is condemned.
  • Chapters 7–8: Amos intercedes for his people. Prophecies include visions and references to Christ as the “stone” and the day of mourning at the Crucifixion.
  • Chapter 9: The prophecy is fulfilled in Christ and the Church, with restoration for the faithful and inclusion of Gentile believers.

Significance:

Amos’s message is a call to social justice, repentance, and authentic faith. His prophecies highlight the seriousness of sin, the hope of restoration, and the importance of humility and righteousness in both personal and communal life.
